Breastfeeding. Feels like everyone’s got an opinion, a blog, a WhatsApp group, and a well-meaning aunt who thinks she knows best.

But today — on World Breastfeeding Day — here’s the stuff that’s actually helpful. No fluff. No judgement. Just a few things here and there.

You and your baby are figuring it out…together

There’s no ‘natural’ switch that flips on. Some babies latch in five seconds, others take days. You might leak everywhere one day, and worry about low supply the next. It’s messy, emotional, and yes — absolutely worth it.

Feeding on cue > Watching the clock

Throw the schedule out. Hungry babies don’t care about time slots. Look for signs: rooting, sucking hands, bobbing around your chest like a tiny heat-seeking missile. The more you feed, the more milk your body makes. It’s clever like that.

Pump if it works for you

Whether you’re heading back to work or just want someone else to take the night shift — pumping is a gamechanger. That said, it’s not for everyone. You don’t have to do it if it stresses you out. Fed baby, calm mama. That’s the goal.

The myths are exhausting. Let’s bust a few:

Myth: You can’t breastfeed if you have small breasts.
Fact: Milk supply has nothing to do with size. Honestly.

Myth: You can’t drink coffee or wine.
Fact: You can. In moderation. Don’t torture yourself.

Myth: Breastfeeding stops you from getting pregnant.
Fact: Only if you’re exclusively feeding, around the clock, for months. And even then — not a guarantee.

Myth: Formula is the easy way out.
Fact: Fed is best. But don’t downplay the effort that goes into either choice.

Other things that REALLY help 

• A comfy chair. Seriously underrated.

• A giant water bottle! You’ll be thirstier than you think.

• Nipple balm. Trust me.

• A friend you can text at 2AM when you’re crying over cluster feeds.

Last thing

If you’re struggling with pain, latch, supply, whatever…just ask for help. A good lactation consultant can work actual miracles. And if you choose not to breastfeed at all? That’s okay too. There’s no gold star for pushing through tears.

This day is a reminder that feeding your baby, whatever that looks like, is a whole journey in itself. So here’s to every mum out there! The breast, bottle, pump, donor milk, combo feeding…you’re doing brilliantly.
